    Routing of railway carriages: A case study

    In the context of organizing timetables for railway companies the following railway carriage routing problem occurs. Given a timetable containing rail links with departure and destination times/stations and the composition of the trains, find a routing of railway carriages such that the required carriages are always available when a train departs. We will present a local search approach for this routing problem for the railway carriages. The approach uses structural properties of an integer multi-commodity network flow formulation of the problem. Computational results for a real world instance are given

    Opportunistic Sensing in Train Safety Systems

    Train safety systems are complex and expensive, and changing them requires huge investments. Changes are evolutionary and small. Current developments, like faster - high speed - trains and a higher train density on the railway network, have initiated research on safety systems that can cope with the new requirements. This paper presents a novel approach for a safety subsystem that checks the composition of a train, based on opportunistic sensing with a wireless sensor network. Opportunistic sensing systems consist of changing constellations sensors that, for a limited amount of time, work together to achieve a common goal. Such constellations are selforganizing and come into being spontaneously. The proposed opportunistic sensing system selects a subset of sensor nodes from a larger set based on a common context.We show that it is possible to use a wireless sensor network to make a distinction between carriages from different trains. The common context is acceleration, which is used to select the subset of carriages that belong to the same train out of all the carriages from several trains in close proximity. Simulations based on a realistic set of sensor data show that the method is valid, but that the algorithm is too complex for implementation on simple wireless sensor nodes. Downscaling the algorithm reduces the number of processor execution cycles as well as memory usage, and makes it suitable for implementation on a wireless sensor node with acceptable loss of precision. Actual implementation on wireless sensor nodes confirms the results obtained with the simulations

    The Relationship Between Hackney carriages and Private Hire Cars in West Yorkshire.

    The 1985 Transport Act substantially altered the legal framework for regulating hackney carriages such that a licensing authority may refuse the grant of a hackney carriage licence for the purpose of limiting the number of hackney carriages if, but only if, it is satisfied that there is no significant demand for the services of hackney carriages which is unmet. By contrast, local councils have never been permitted to impose an artificial limit on the number of private hire cars in this way. The questions of interest are: i) For what purposes do people use hackney carriages and private hire cars, and how do these differ? ii) Do consumers perceive any difference between hackney carriages and private hire cars, and to what extent are these differences considered important? iii) What are the implications of (i) and (ii) for licensing policy? The answer to these questions is to be found in an analysis of West Yorkshire and Leeds data collected by ITS. We also use some evidence gained during an unmet demand study conducted by ITS for Rochdale Borough Council

    Analysis of dynamic behavior and safety of baby carriages in public transportation buses

    Issues concerning the use of baby carriages in public buses are still pendant of international legislation that could contribute to unify provisions around accessibility and safety on this type of transportation. There is actually a lack of knowledge round the dynamic behavior and forces involved in the movement of baby carriages when on board in public transportation services. This paper focuses on an analysis of the forces transmitted to the baby carriages and their behavior during normal operation and critical maneuvers by public buses. The article presents partially the results obtained from a research project conducted by the Institute of Design and Manufacturing (IDF) of the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (Spain) in cooperation with the Institute for Automobile Research (INSIA) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). The aim was to establish the technical requirements for accessibility and safety of baby carriages (US) or prams (UK) in public buses that could help national and international community to develop standards and provisions on this type of people mobility. A series of tests with different types of baby carriages were carried out in public ransportation buses in closed tracks and open roads to simulate the behavior of critical maneuvers in urban traffic. From an analysis of the testing results it was possible to identify situations where restraint systems should be used, as well as the safest orientation and location within a bus for baby carriages, and enabled the development of a Code of Good Practice for bus operators, users, and baby carriage manufacturers. Furthermore, the analysis of the dynamic forces allowed the development of a new restraint device for securing carriages inside the vehicle s passenger compartment.The research project 'Accessibility Requirements and the Safe Use of Baby Carriages in Public Buses' (ASUCAR), has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PET2008_0328) during 2008-2011 National Research Program.
